Reading
Reading is the most fundamental of all skills we teach at school. As such every night your child should be reading something for 20 minutes. I don't care if its a book, magazine, comic book, how to, cook book, anything that engages their mind. As long as they are reading words and connecting ideas its great. Even video game walkthrough guides is providing instructions that kids have to follow which is great for developing rational thought processes. Just don't let video game guides be the only thing they read, students are best served by enjoying a wide selection of genres and titles.
